Hi, I'm Scott designer, beard enthusiast and producer living in Louisville, KY.

2009 Spring Garden

With 2008 come and gone, thoughts of Spring are starting to enter my mind. I look out my kitchen window and see our garden filled with decomposing leaves from this past Autumn. As these leaves work their magic to improve our backyard soil, Nadine and I are working out our ideas for our Spring 2009 garden.

We are going to be increasing our number of vegetables and also adding a bit of fruit to our list of what we are planting. The garden will be divided into 8 sections. The main garden will take up four of these sections and will make up most of our garden. In the main four sections we will be planting the following:

  • Green Beans
  • Bell Peppers
  • Carnival Mix (Red, Green, Yellow and Purple Bell Peppers)
  • Lima Beans
  • Tomatoes (Healthy Kick and Burpee’s BurgerHybrid)
  • Anaheim Peppers
  • Eggplant
  • Broccoli
  • Melon
  • Beets
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Collard Greens

In our four smaller box gardens we will be growing the following:

  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Zucchini
  • Squash

The reason we are sectioning off Sprouts, Zucchini and Squash is to hopefully have better control over our Aphid infestation we had last year and avoid the Aphids spreading to the rest of our garden. We are also going to be purchasing Ladybugs as they love to snack on Aphids.

Last year we constructed a salad bar table, which we read about constructing in a ReadyMade magazine article.

This year we will be planting salad items and herbs in the salad bar. The salad bar will contain the following:

  • Mesclun Greens
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Chives
  • Rosemary
  • Cilantro
  • Mint
  • Spinach

If you have any planting techniques, pest control methods or comments please give me a shout or drop a comment on this article. Happy New Year and happy growing!
